Graph 1 shows the trend in the cause of deaths for the period 1997 to 2007 with an increase in deaths associated with Infectious/ Parasitic Diseases and respiratory infections. Ill-defined deaths refer to deaths where there is a lack of detail about the actual underlying cause of the death.

Graph 2 depicts the distribution of clinical trials according to therapeutic areas. 1305 clinical trials were registered on the registry as of 24 Feb 2012. According to the information from the South African Clinical Trials Register (SANCTR), the top disease areas that are being researched are Immunology / Infectious Diseases, Endocrinology, Cardiovascular/ Vascular Diseases, Oncology and Pulmonary/Respiratory Diseases.
